Retro Sunday: Ukraine 2007

Ah, Verka Serduchka. She is so caricatural she's almost a parody on the parody. And do we love those kind of people? Oh yes. Seriously, no Ukraine has ever been this good at counting to seven in German:



If you don't tap your feet even just a little to this, you're either totally deaf or the Scissor Sisters. From the very first sieben, sieben this is a song you cannot ignore. You are forced to make a stand, either on the hateful or on the affectional side. We're of course lovin it, mostly for what it represents. Verka offers us complete dedication, craziness and happiness. She is a doll in tin foil and does look like a silvery Christmas three with that bright star to top it off. Whatta woman. And we do want those shoes for New Years, mind you.

Also, please notice that gold clad man on accordion. His somewhat cool calmness is admirable amongst all those other nutcases. While the stewardess to our left is one smoking hot woman. Hips and breasts FTW! Guess there is nothing more to say here than Lasha tumbai. And yeah, of course: Ein, zwei, drei, Tanzen!

Retro Sunday: Ukraine 2006

Every Sunday we give you some of our favorite old entries to cheer you up a little extra and make you miss the glorious old days. Today we bring you Eastern European girl power:

Ukraine has established a tradition of letting kickass lovely ladies represent the country in ESC, and there's no reason to quit as long as they do so well, we reckon. Tina Karol finished 7th in Athens and we noticed that it was still one of the most popular tracks on the dance floor at Euroclub in Oslo. We wouldn't mind dancing the night away to Tina's funky beats at Euroclub next year either!

And then there's rag doll Alyosha from Ukraine. The end is really near here, and we have a feeling it has something to do with the environment. You know, sustainable development and all that go green and save the planet stuff. Our theory is that this is actually recycled rags found in Chernobyl. And the shoes? Probably vintage, protective equipment worn by the workers at the nuclear power plant.

Let’s just be clear: Power ballads were a thing in the 90s. Even back then they were just our excuse to make out with silly boys down at the youth club. We are somewhat happy that Ukraine decided to cut the Phil Collins they first decided to go for, but to bring in Alannah Myles instead?? Not sure we get the idea.

Ukraine should be able to come up with something better. They’ve had Shady Ladies and Wild Dances and the most fantastic of them all, Verka Serduchka - everything so much more fun than the grumpy lady that will enter the stage this year. She sings like a girl in high school performing with the local band, trying to look very moved while the wind literally tries to blow dry her hair. Oh, so the end is near? Have to say we do believe you in this specific context. No further comment.

Only one plus here - we do love her dress. Reminding us of something Norwegian Fairytale designer Leila Hafzi could have made, it's actually one of the nicest frocks we have seen in this year's Eurovision pre selection round so far. Guess any blondehead could have worn it, though. 

Please figure out who killed the Ukrainian show, quit yelling and bring the brain back.
